The True Story of Tartan Day Tour x Prickly Thistle

The True Story of Tartan Day Tour X Prickly Thistle

We have all heard stories about tartan..... but there is a Highland story that never gets spoken, until now!

This immersive full-day tour is a collaboration between Highland Tour Company and Prickly Thistle – who built what is the only weaving mill in the region and now home makers to the infamous Rebel Row Store in the Highland Capital.

Culloden Battlefield

We begin at the haunting site of the 1746 Battle of Culloden, where the Jacobite cause came to a tragic end. You'll walk the battlefield and hear the truth behind the myths, setting the stage for understanding how tartan – and Highland identity – was nearly wiped out. We reflect on Prickly Thistle's rebellious spirit, bringing Highland weaving back to life as a form of activism and truth-telling.

Fort George

Explore this imposing 18th-century fortress, built to suppress Highland defiance. As you walk its ramparts, we'll discuss how tartan went from banned cloth to a symbol of modern pride. The visit links with Prickly Thistle's ethos of honouring tradition while pushing boundaries.

Champagne Lunch

Enjoy a curated countryside lunch featuring traditional Scottish flavours with modern presentation and a glass of Champagne. Tartan blankets, sustainable utensils, and books on cloth history help connect the meal to our story. We discuss Prickly Thistle’s commitment to sustainable integrity and ethical practices in every fibre. Takeaway picnic from XOKO Bakehouse or lunch under cover at the Battlefield Bar, weather dependent.

Clootie Well

Visit this mystical Highland site where visitors have tied cloths to trees for centuries in hopes of healing. We'll explore how cloth and culture have always been connected, linking beautifully with Prickly Thistle’s use of fabric as a storytelling medium.

Prickly Thistle Mill

Arrive at the UK's first B Corp certified weaving mill, where century-old looms have been reawakened by a rebel team committed to clean energy and zero waste. Learn how district tartans are designed with purpose, reflecting identity, activism, and community.

Rebel Row

End your day at the flagship Rebel Row store in Inverness. Here you’ll see tartan reborn as ethical fashion. Browse bespoke garments, homewares, and exclusive designs crafted with creative courage. Learn about Prickly Thistle’s vision for tartan’s future as a force for cultural pride and sustainable rebellion.
